Tree down after a storm?
Stay clear of wires and call 911 if anyone is hurt or a line is down. Parkway tree or road blocked in Joliet: Roadways, 815-724-3650. For your own tree, send a request.
First question: is it your tree or the City's?
In Joliet the strip of grass between the sidewalk and the curb is the parkway, and a dead or dying tree there is City property and the City's job to remove. Where there's no sidewalk, a City foreman or arborist decides where the parkway ends (Joliet Forestry). To report one, call the Roadways Division at 815-724-3650 (City FAQ).
Anything in your yard, or in an alley, is private, and the City won't touch it (Forestry). That's where a private tree crew comes in.
Why Joliet yards keep needing tree work
- 2011 Emerald ash borer officially found in Joliet, near Black Road and Dawes Avenue, as reported at the time (Herald-News repost). By 2012 the city arborist said up to 80% of city ash might be infested (Patch).
- Aug 10, 2020 Derecho. The NWS estimated 74-knot gusts in northwest Joliet between Caton Farm Road/I-55 and Larkin Avenue/Black Road, with several hundred trees damaged (NWS storm data).
- Aug 11, 2026 Another derecho. The City asked residents to report downed parkway trees at 815-724-3650, and large trees were damaged at Oakwood Cemetery on Lincoln Highway (Herald-News). ComEd reported about 80,000 customers without power that evening (same source).
Before anyone starts cutting
- Call J.U.L.I.E. at 811 before a stump is ground or anything is dug; the City's forestry page says the same (Forestry).
- If branches touch the wire to your house, ComEd will drop or de-energize that service line for free with at least 5 days' notice: 1-800-334-7661 (ComEd).
- Ask any company whether it holds a current City of Joliet tree service license. The City itself tells residents to use tree companies that are licensed and bonded (Joliet Forestry).
- Ask for a written quote and proof of insurance. We don't vouch for anyone's credentials; you should check them.

FAQ
Common questions
Will the City of Joliet remove a dead tree in my backyard?
No. The City removes dead or dying parkway trees only. Trees on private property or in alleys are the owner’s responsibility.
Who do I call about a parkway tree in Joliet?
The Roadways Division at 815-724-3650.
Does the City grind the stump when it removes a parkway tree?
The City says it leaves the grindings in the hole and the resident fills it with dirt and seed or sod.
Is this a tree company?
No. Joliet Tree Removal is a referral site. Requests are passed on to an independent local provider who quotes and does the work.
